Norberto Taveras is pursuing a Master's Degree at the Silberman School of Social Work at Hunter College and expects to graduate in May 2012 with a specialization in health and mental health. As an avid leader for people with disabilities, Norberto is a passionate advocate for empowering the disabled. At Hunter, Norberto has been recognized for his ability to bring parents, school officials, and students with special needs together to develop and implement a sustainable educational plan built on trust, communication, and high expectations. Norberto completed a degree in Social Work at the Silver School of Social Work at New York University (NYU) in 2011. As an NYU student, he completed a number of internships, including case management at Barrier Free Living (BFL) Transitional Housing, which supports people with disabilities .In addition to having his own private practice as a Clinical Social Worker, Norberto seeks to establish a non-profit organization that advocates and provides direct services to ensure adequate accommodations, mobility equipment as well as educational and career counseling for the disabled. Norberto graduated with an associate's degree in liberal arts from Hostos Community College (HCC) in 2009. While at Hostos, Norberto was a proud participant of the College Discovery Program, which awarded him with Academic Excellence Awards and received the Silver Award for Academic Excellence from the Department of Modern Languages. He also earned First Place atEl Diario la Prensa's Speech Competition in Spanish, and receivedfor the HCC Women's Studies Essay Competition. Norberto was inducted into Phi Theta Kappa, the international honor society for two-year colleges, and Sigma Delta Mu, the honor society of the humanities.
